Mechanical engineers play key roles in every industrial sector which can range from transportation, energy, and aerospace to packaging, manufacturing and maintenance, processing, building and infrastructure. Today, this is even more so with the increasing reliance in machinery and automation across all sectors across the globe.
The Bachelor’s degree aims to produce graduate engineers who are able to meet the challenging needs of todays and tomorrow’s industries and society. The curriculum is rigorous to ensure solid foundation in current mechanical engineering principles enriched with industrial relevance and group work.
This programme is accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). Our degrees are offered as 3 year BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) or 4 year MEng (Master of Engineering) qualifications. Both the BEng and MEng are internationally recognized by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). Our MEng qualification is designed to satisfy the academic requirements set by the Engineering Council UK for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
For registration by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), an additional year to complete the MEng programme is required plus a minimum of 10 weeks industrial placement.
Graduates are in constant demand. Many engineers make their careers in established areas, perhaps in the infrastructure industries of energy and transportation or the design and manufacture of advanced equipment. Others find rewarding careers meeting the challenges of applying new materials and intelligent systems to products and manufacturing processes.
Teaching methods range from lectures, tutorial classes and mentor sessions, to workshop and laboratory activities supported by group and individual projects. Assessment is by examination, coursework, presentations, group project and individual project.

The first level, known as Watt Level of the EmPOWER Programme is compulsory for all students and will be offered in their first year of undergraduate degree studies. Watt Level focuses on Leading Self and Defining Impact and is delivered through POWER talk sessions conducted by a panel of experienced POWER speakers. The other three levels (Kilowatt, Megawatt and Gigawatt) are achieved through a more personalised approach developed by students with their Personal Tutors.
Before coming to study in Heriot-Watt university, I had done my fair bit of research and found that Heriot-Watt ranks as one of the best UK university to study mechanical engineering. Adding to that the location of the university and the international degree that it offers, my choice was clear.
