The applications of statistical data science range from economics and medicine to social and environmental sciences. Our BSc in Statistical Data Science provides a blend of both theoretical and applied elements of modern statistics, and aims to give students the training in modelling, analysing and interpreting real data that is required in the economy, industry and research. The first year of the programme covers basic mathematics, probability and statistics. The final two years focus on specialist topics of statistical modelling and advanced courses in mathematics and data science. A variety of statistical computer packages are used.
Our programme is accredited by the Royal Statistical Society. It is possible for students who have completed the programme to apply for some exemptions from the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA) professional examinations.
Due to the near-universal relevance of statistical modelling, career opportunities exist for suitably qualified statisticians in a wide variety of areas, notably, business, insurance, financial consulting, market research, government agencies, the pharmaceutical industry and scientific research in areas such as environmental science.

This programme is one of the few in Malaysia which is fully accredited by the UK Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFoA). Good performance means exemptions from the Core Principles subjects (CS1, CS2, CM1, CM2, CB1, CB2), giving prospective actuaries an advantage over those in other mathematics based programmes. The degree is also accredited by the Royal Statistical Society and by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
Additionally, we are also recognised by the Society of Actuaries (SOA) under Universities & Colleges with Actuarial Programs - Advanced Curriculum (UCAP-AC) which is the highest level of recognition in Malaysia.
Employment prospects are good, with excellent financial rewards. Our students readily find work as trainee actuaries and graduates are also well-equipped for more general careers like accountancy, banking, stockbroking or teaching. What’s more, actuarial skills are appreciated anywhere in the world.
Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and project work. Course assessment is generally based on either coursework or an exam at the end of the semester, or a mixture of the two at the end of the semester or academic year.

In the current era of digital revolution, computer scientists and software engineers can be found at the forefront, driving latest developments in a broad range of fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, bioinformatics, healthcare, and data informatics.
Our BSc Computing Science degree focuses on software development and algorithms, with the aim of constructing robust and usable systems for industry and commerce. As well as looking at cutting edge tools and techniques, it’s designed to help you build the next generation of software tools that other system constructors will use. The course aims to give a well-integrated balance of theoretical underpinnings and practical experience, strongly informed by the research expertise of our academic staff.
The programme consists of core computer science, information technology and mathematics units in Year 1 and 2. Students in Year 3 will take highly specialised units including three elective units and will also be conducting a year-long individual final-year dissertation project. Students will also undertake an industrial training programme between Year 2 and 3.
In accordance with our normal practice our professionally orientated programmes are designed to meet the educational requirements for membership of relevant professional institutions. In addition to recognition within Malaysia, we seek accreditation by the relevant UK or international professional bodies in accordance with their standard procedures.
We are also currently in the process of obtaining accreditation from BCS, The Chartered Institute of IT, UK.
The present global demand for computing skills presents numerous career opportunities in software and technology sectors, and also supports many other industries such as financial services, telecommunications, retail and manufacturing. Employment prospects are good, with excellent financial rewards and career pathway. The EmPOWER Programme is a 4-level structured programme anchored by six developmental domains. These are designed to deliver experiential learning opportunities that provide a lifelong foundation for building emotional intelligence, resilience, and happiness.
The first level, known as Watt Level of the EmPOWER Programme is compulsory for all students and will be offered in their first year of undergraduate degree studies. Watt Level focuses on Leading Self and Defining Impact and is delivered through POWER talk sessions conducted by a panel of experienced POWER speakers. The other three levels (Kilowatt, Megawatt and Gigawatt) are achieved through a more personalised approach developed by students with their Personal Tutors.
